Life is harsh for migrants in Libya. Yet this country, situated at the crossroads between Africa and Europe, has become a strategic partner for European governments.<\/p>\r\n
Despite the power of militias, despite torture and abusive detention practices, many countries continue to rely on Libya to enforce a strict migration containment policy. And it appears to be working\u2014at least in part. Official figures suggest that departures have been cut by half. But at what cost?<\/p>\r\n
For the first time in years, the Libyan authorities have agreed to open the doors of their notoriously criticized detention centers. They want to show the world that conditions are acceptable. \u201cWe feed them twice a day,\u201d officials insist. That may be true, but in the detention centers of Bir Ghanem and Tajoura, which our team was allowed to visit, migrants are desperate. Some, intercepted at sea only two days earlier, are already begging to be sent home. Others have been held there for more than a year. Many cry out for help, complaining that they must pay bribes to secure their release and remain trapped indefinitely in vast, foul-smelling warehouses.<\/p>\r\n
Those who have managed to get out describe rampant corruption, widespread racism, and the torture they endured at the hands of smugglers along the route.<\/p>\r\n
In the desert, our team followed the forces trying to stop the traffickers: Brigade 444. Through relentless patrols, they have effectively shut down one of the smugglers\u2019 main routes, forcing traffickers to abandon it. Their convoys now take alternative paths, reaching the departure beaches through remote tracks and with the active complicity of other security actors.<\/p>\r\nAlong those shores, the bodies of the less fortunate are recovered almost every day. Those who are intercepted at sea end up in detention.
