This outcrop of the Armorican massif forms a true \u201cunderwater island,\u201d rising from the depths of the oceanic plateau to just 3 meters below the surface, in a chaotic maze of granite rocks and sand. The shallow waters here are remarkably clear, allowing for the growth of a unique underwater flora, with genuine kelp forests stretching down to 40 meters along the drop-offs.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"996\">This unique area in France remains relatively unknown. Its geographical distance from the coast, the depths of its drop-offs, and the often capricious swell of the Bay of Biscay discourage most visitors. Only professional fishers regularly venture there, to the dismay of environmentalists who campaign for this unique section of the Atlantic coastline to be protected.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1549\">Indeed, the scientific community recognizes the Rochebonne Plateau as a spawning ground for many species, most notably the European seabass, a fish of major commercial importance.
